A Message from Kylie

“What I like about the Mule Tote is that it’s a really fun project to sew for new or experienced sewists. This project could be done slowly over a Sunday or managed in tiny chunks in the gaps of life.

However long it takes, the intention for the maker is to have an enjoyable time sewing this tote using the construction method provided. And as a bonus, the bag finishes so nicely, which makes it the perfect gift!

My advice, start with the Maxi. It requires 1m of fabric so I’m sure you’ve got something in your stash for this project already! Once you’ve sewn one, the next will be easier and you’ll be able to enjoy the process all over again. I always find myself admiring the neat seams when the project is finished, it is what makes this a very special tote bag in a world full of many tote bags!”

A Fab Customer Review

"The Mule Tote is my new favourite. The flat felled seams make the finish so tidy and a new skill unlocked. Easy to follow pattern and it can be modified to many ways. I have added two long thin ties to the inside of the top fold, along the sides, to keep my goods tucked inside. The standard size is a great bag for work and shopping for lunch boxes etc. Folds up nicely too".

Great pattern, easy to follow and I love my new bag!

Absolutely love this pattern! Super easy to sew and the handiest tote around! I went with the KATM webbing straps and I think it really elevated the look. My husband and mum have now requested one each as well! 😊

Really enjoyed making the Mule Tote for my niece. Instructions were great and it’s a sewing quick win for a rainy weekend. I also loved adding my new KATM labels!

Super easy to follow instructions! I just need to work on sewing straight 😀

Easy to follow instructions- I made a lovely gift

I made 3 mule totes. 1 for my niece and 1 each for her twin daughters. They loved them. Great pattern.

Excellent pattern!

Absolutely found the pattern to be so easy to follow!

Printing service is fast and affordable- highly recommend. Excellent customer service and quality products.

I havent made the tote yet, but I love the look of it and there are clear instructions to follow

Wonderful instructions and images to follow making it an excellent project for an advanced beginner. I made mine out of a thinner cotton skirt that no longer fit, so I also lined it. Made it a bit trickier to work with, but I have a sturdy bag in the end. I also used the KATM webbing and it was the perfect length for the maxi tote - just cut the webbing in half!

Pattern was great and easy to follow, great for any one who needs a larger tote bag.

Love it! Love my new bag. Made the smaller of the two sizes in denim which gave me a few challenges on some seams but I ended up with an awesome new bag for work and now have been asked to make another for my daughter. Good, easy-to-follow instructions. Recommend to all levels of sewists!

Great scrap buster! I’ve wanted to bust some of my scraps before starting any more big projects and this was so perfect! I love both sizes- the smaller size for just a great tote and the larger is a great beach bag. Lots of interesting details that make this a fun sew.

Fast Fun and Practical This pattern was just what I needed to get back into sewing as others have also pointed out. Great instructions, not too challenging but challenging enough to keep me interested and motivated. The finished bag looks great and is very practical for everyday use. I can't wait to make this again in different fabrics and handles. I love a pattern that I can reuse, feeling confident about the results. I hope KATM plans to release more lovely, thoughtful patterns.

Easy and professional! I used this project to get myself back into sewing (a beginner who hasn't touched a machine in 10+ years) and it's a perfect pattern to play around with! I found the instructions easy to follow and the bag came together beautifully. It's the most professional looking thing I have ever attempted to sew! I will definitely be making more of these.

Great tote This pattern is great, have sewn up a few now... Instructions are nice and clear, I'm a beginner and was able to follow along and each bag I am able to improve on the last one. They are a really nice design and super strong with the flat seems. The only tip I've worked out myself that wasn't really written in the instructions is to pull the material flat when sewing the finishing seam attaching central panel to front and back... I find if I don't pull it firm it can make a little lip on the edge. As a beginner this wasn't obvious to me to do it until I noticed and worked out how to not do it on the next one. But great bag to learn all the seams and practice sewing straight lines. Everyone I know is getting a tote for Xmas haha! Thank you for a fantastic tote pattern!

Really clear! Instructions are really good and design is perfect

Easy and fun project The pattern and instructions were well thought out and clear. This is a super easy and fun project with lots of scope for individual creativity! Love it and would highly recommend.

The bag is a Tardis Great bag, so much room and love the pockets. I use it for a work bag and I get so much in it ❤️

Fun & doable project! So far I’ve made two regular sized totes as gifts …and I can assure you, it’s only the beginning. Plenty of room for creativity with the pattern in fabric choices & colour positioning. I try to use reclaimed fabrics when sewing & this bag pattern is perfect for that. I’ve chosen the overlocking of seams due to fabric choice & it was very manageable. Thanks KATM for an wonderfully thought out pattern! Would highly recommend & I can’t wait to make more!

super easy and makes a gorgeous bag I hadn't sewn since primary school but found making these bags quite easy. I used some Jocelyn Proust drill material for a maxi and normal sized tote then used vintage linene tea towels to make a third bag. I love that there are two pockets and the inside is well finished. Highly recommend.

Fun Tote I had fun making this Tote with awesome Surface Art fabric and included a snazzy button for the inside pocket! I also added a few labels, Bespoke and You Can't Buy This to enhance my unique style. I used the updated pattern and agree the corners were fiddly but manageable. I will get out the overlocker for the next one...I'll make the time. I have a few requests from friends already!

Bag of usefulness I made the smaller bag, I love the pattern. I used the quicker method but was slightly confused with the instructions. Nevertheless worked it out. The recipient loves the bag and said it looked professional. I will make more for sure!!

Great pattern for a newbie! I bought this pattern to make some gifts for teachers, family & friends this silly season, having a basic sewing machine, a pile of canvas and a dream. It is a great pattern, and turns out really well overall. Printing options for at home and at the printers work great (I got mine done at Officeworks in A0 and A1 and they’re spot on). I didn’t give the pattern a perfect score, but only because I’m an absolute newbie and have had trouble tackling the enclosed seams- a video would be great to further clarify this. Otherwise, it’s a brilliant pattern!

Great-looking bag The instructions are very clear and well written. Did I stick to them? No. My fabric was heavy (IKEA cotton curtain fabric) so I opted not to sew the flat-felled-type seams. Instead, I covered the seams with bias binding, which gave a nice finish to the inside of the tote. I used flat braid (two lengths sewn together with zigzag) for the handles. I was very pleased with the finished tote, though I prefer a firmer base with heavy fabric. Next time I will add a separate plastic base. I’m also planning to make some lightweight folding totes in ripstop nylon. I can see this pattern getting a lot of use.

Fab Tote pattern I've almost finished my 2nd Tote. The instructions are very easy to understand. Even though the corners are a little fiddly, follow the instructions and be patient, then the corners will turn out great. Great idea for Xmas presses, or use for putting Xmas presents in.. Yep I labelled mine..

Fabulous pattern The Mule Tote is a great pattern - clearly written, taking you step by step through the process. The bag has great features: perfectly sized inner and outer pockets, strong flat felled seams (a little tricky around the corners, but doable), reinforced stitching where the straps attach, and the perfect size for supermarket and farmers market shopping. I see more in my future. I might experiment with French seams next time. Oh, and lots of options for placement of KATM labels. Thanks Kylie!

Well Thought Out I approached this project like I do every project. Thinking I know more than the pattern creator. This turns out to be very seldom true. Lol I originally skipped a couple of small steps because I didn’t see the reason. Turns out later I found out that those steps were very important. Once I then read through all of the directions and then started following them it turned out to be a very easy process. Very well written and carefully thought out. I love my new tote and I will be making a maxi next, but I will be following the directions. Can’t wait to see all the other things Kylie comes up with.

Well written :) Great pattern for a cute tote. Going to make one for all my friends!

Fab Tote This pattern is well written with easy to understand instructions and pictures. I've only been sewing for about a year and I found this great to make, the inclusion of flat fell seems makes the finish really professional. I made the maxi to start with, and will be making more - super handy bags! Thanks KATM, hopefully the first of many patterns from you!

Totes fun This is a great straight forward pattern. I found it easy to follow and really liked the option of either printing the pattern pieces or using the provided measurements to cut the pieces. My first make was the Maxi size in a striped canvas and I love it. There will be many more.
